How Microtag Works

FAR® Membership, Tag Application, etc. 

  1. You, an Artist, Collector, Galleries, Museum, Jeweler, Insurance Industry,etc, decide you want to make a permanent record of a work of art you have created or obtained or of a whole collection of art work.
  2. You become a member of Fine Art Registry through Neglia Services.
  3. You purchase high tech FAR tags for your pieces.
  4. You apply the tags, photograph the pieces with the description and email it to Neglia Services will upload and register each one on the FAR web site so there is a permanent record in our database with all relevant information.
  5. The images of the piece will appear in your portfolio gallery on the FAR web site.
  6. When you sell a piece of your art, gift it or donate it to someone you carry out an electronic transfer of ownership on the FAR web site so that the sale is a matter of official record. An image of the piece is transferred to the new owner's portfolio gallery for all to share.
  7. Collectors looking for art to buy for their collections can browse the FAR galleries or find work by specific artists and buy with the security of knowing that the provenance of the pieces is established and authentic.
  8. Artists or collectors can simply provide a link to their galleries when they want to show a prospective buyer what they have for sale.
  9. Insurance claims can be made and dealt with in the certainty that the piece of art actually existed and was owned by the person or entity making the claim
  10. If a work of art is lost or stolen it can be instantly designated as such on the FAR web site, making it easier for it to be recovered.
  11. A artists, collector, gallery, museum, jeweler, etc acquiring a valuables piece can use the Fine Art Registry to help ensure that the piece is not stolen or forged.
  12. 50, 100 or 500 years from now, the provenance of a work of art can be verified on the FAR web site and its history traced.

Neglia services has partnered with the Fine Art Registry® is the first of its kind. This new, patent-pending identification numbering system and interactive database is a vision realized, engineered and specially developed as a web-based permanent standard registration system and globally networked database systimizese for jewelry, fine art and collectibles. Fine Art Registry® method, process and apparatus standardizes, sys, collects, and publishes, the portfolios of contemporary artists worldwide, as well as those works purchased by collectors on the secondary market. Fine Art principle philosophy is to promote the permanent registration of all jewelry, fine art and valuables before theft or loss occurs, recording detailed and accurate information about each piece, thereby providing the global art trade a solution to better manage, better control, and better market fine art and collectibles, encouraging accountability, good business practices, and truthful disclosure of the jewelry, fine art and collectible markets.

This system was developed and patented by Theresa Franks who is the founder and CEO of the company. She is an avid collector of art, rare manuscripts and other items, and ran into the problem of how to securely identify her art and prove that it was hers for insurance or loss purposes. In coming up with a system she also developed a means for artists to guarantee provenance and authenticity of their work as they create it.

The system consists of two parts. One is a high tech tag or identifier which is attached to the piece of art, jewelry, valuable, etc. There are three choices here. One is a tag about the size of a quarter but made of a thin, acid free plastic, which is affixed to the painting, vase, or any item with an acid free adhesive. It has a unique number. It also has five additional levels of covert security built in to it. Part of the technology is the use of taggens which are tiny identifiable particles used also by the FBI in tracing explosives. This tag can be removed without damaging the item it is affixed to, but if it is removed, it leaves identifiable traces behind which can be tracked to the Fine Art Registry® and to the owner of the piece. If removed, the tag becomes unusable. It is virtually impossible to forge one of these tags. There are two alternative methods of identification. One is called a Micro-tag which is a tiny black dot about 1/16th" in diameter which has all the same information as the larger tag on it and has four levels of covert security built into it. This is used for smaller objects or when a more covert means of identifying an item is desired. The third method is laser engraving of the same identifying information. This is particularly applicable to gemstones, jewelry and so on as all the information on one of the larger tags can be inscribed on the post of an earring, or on a diamond.

The second part of the system is a secure, remote, central database on the Fine Art Registry ® website. The person registering an item first tags it with one of the above methods and then enters the tag number, photos and a complete description into the database. The item can be shown in a portfolio or not at the owner's discretion. The combination of the permanent tag and the permanent record is the crux of the Fine Art Registry® system.

In developing this system, Theresa Franks researched the RFID possibility and rejected it because it is unstable, unreliable and insecure. It is intended for logistic purposes rather than security purposes (tracking packages and items on production lines and so on). This system she has patented surpasses the RFID method and meets all requirements for securely tagging jewelry, fine art and valuable collectibles.

Neglia Services is partnering with Fine Art Registry®,using the Fine Art Registry technology to provide a unique service to their customers. With jewelry, the main tagging methods will be the Micro-tag and the laser inscription. The value to insurer and insured alike should be pretty clear. All too often stolen property is recovered and the owner cannot be traced. Also, all too often bogus insurance claims are made and there is no evidence what so ever that the person making the claim actually owned the piece. Using the system above, someone's entire collection can be tagged and registered quite inexpensively and the owner can simply refer the insurer to their portfolio on the website for a complete list of items along with photos and full description. All sorts of other information, such as appraisals and provenance of the item, date of purchase, value etc. This service is also of considerable use to jewelers as the fact that a piece of jewelry is tagged and registered will boost the trust that the jeweler will not substitute another stone, etc. when repairing or dealing with expensive jewelry.
 
So, there it is in a nutshell. The system is unique to Fine Art Registry® and the partnership with Neglia Services is the only jewelry related partnership. The underlying technology in the tags does have broader uses. The biggest distinguishing part of this system is the publicly accessible database with a full, permanent, secure record of everything uploaded to it. This is also patented.

At the end of the tagged tip, is a black micro dot with a self adhesive, which gets pulled off and applied to any item, the remainder of the tag would be applied to that said document as a record of authenticity.

Are Fine Art Registry tags easy to apply to my artwork and valuables?
Yes. Just peel the tag from the backing and place it on the item. As soon as the tag is placed, it should be considered permanent. We will send you easy to follow instructions with each shipment of tags.
Are the Fine Art Registry tags safe to use on any surface?
Yes. The tags are manufactured using 100% acid free materials and adhesives.
Are there any limitations on what surfaces you can apply the tags to?
You may apply the tags to any surface and they will work for most applications. The tags have a strong adhesion quality and will literally adhere to any relatively smooth surface. FAR is currently developing a product for smaller valuables, like jewelry, necklaces, watches, coins, and other small objects. In the meantime, however, you should feel free to order tags and formally register smaller pieces. After all, making the initial permanent record by tagging and registering the item with Fine Art Registry is better than nothing at all. For smaller items where it is obviously too small to apply the tag directly to the piece, the tag would have to be applied to the packaging of the item and photographed accordingly.
How long will the tags last?
The tags are thermally and chemically stable and designed to last as long as or longer than the item they are attached to.

The tag is meant to be permanent and it is tamper evident, which means that if removal is attempted after application, it will render the tag useless. Therefore, it is cautioned that after the tag is applied or affixed, it will not be possible to safely remove and reposition without destroying the integrity of the tag, but will not apply damage to the artwork or valuable.
Is it possible for the tags to be duplicated, copied or forged?
The patented design and multiple layers of security technology make it virtually impossible to duplicate or counterfeit Fine Art Registry tags.
How will my Fine Art Registry tags be shipped to me?
For security reasons, all tags are shipped via UPS or another similar shipping service so the package can be tracked.
What if my tags are lost or stolen before I have a chance to apply them to my items?
You will simply report the tags as lost or stolen and order new ones. Lost or stolen tags cannot be used by someone else other than the registered user who ordered them in the first place (that includes thieves and other criminals).
